Some of the online update sections for Protein Structure
and Function are completely new; others are revised
and/or expanded versions of existing sections. Our suggestions
on how they best fit with the original text are listed below.
U1-1 and U1-2 Secondary Structure
The two revised sections on secondary structure can be used to
replace the existing sections, 1-5 and 1-8.
U1-3 to U1-5 Protein Folding
The revised section on folding and the new
sections on chaperones and protein folding diseases will be more
easily understood if read after Chapter 3, because the section on
chaperones depends on some familiarity with the concept of conformational
changes driven by nucleotide hydrolysis and the section on folding
diseases makes reference to the proteasome. These sections could
be taught together with sections 4-14 and 4-15 from Chapter 4, which
discuss chameleon sequences and prion and amyloid diseases.
U1-6 to U1-15 Membrane Proteins
The new sections on membrane protein structure and function
extend section 1-11 on membrane protein structure, and add examples
of conformational changes underlying ion transport across membranes
to the coverage of protein functions in Chapter 2.
(New for 20072008 Note that the sections on Active Transport, added in the
20062007 update, have been revised for the 20072008
update to reflect more recent developments.)
U2-1 to U2-4 Enzyme Kinetics
The new sections on enzyme kinetics can be used after section 2-6, an overview
of catalysis, and to supplement the subsequent Chapter 2 sections on catalytic
mechanisms and the Chapter 3 sections on enzyme regulation, particularly 3-0,
3-4 and 3-5.
Chapter 3 from Cell Signaling by Lim, Mayer and Pawson Protein Interactions
New for 20072008
This chapter from a forthcoming title in the Primers series contains basic sections on
the principles and kinetics of binding interactions that extend and supplement the
coverage of binding interactions in sections 2-1, 2-3 and 2-4. Much of the content
of this chapter will be included in the next edition of Protein Structure and Function.
U3-1 and U3-2 Control by pH and Redox
The revised sections on control by pH and redox can be used to replace
section 3-3.
U3-3 and U3-4 Protein Phosphatases
The new sections on phosphatases can be used after
any of the sections on eukaryotic kinases, 3-12 to 3-14.
(New for 20072008 Note that these sections, added in the 20042005 update, have been revised for the 20072008 update to reflect more recent developments.)
